Montana Scenic-Historic Byway Rulemaking

The Montana Department of Transportation has just published the rules for the Montana Scenic-Historic Byway Program.  The  Montana Tribal Tourism Alliance would like to commend the Department of Transportation and everyone who worked so hard to develop the Scenic-Historic Byway program in Montana.  We made a number of comments about the proposed rules, several of which were adopted.  In other areas, where our language was not adopted, we were satisfied that the Commission understood our concerns.

Millions of dollars of new funding have been allocated to States under the federal Scenic Byway program.  The Montana Scenic-Historic Byway program will be a great boost to tourism efforts of Montana's Tribal communities.  The development and successful implementation of the Montana Scenic-Historic Byway Program should prove to be a great boon to our efforts to promote tourism and economic development on Montana's Reservations.  The program has been well implemented nationally and has proven to be a great success in other states.  Download a copy of our Draft Strategic Plan.

Montana Department of Transportation Vacancies

Governor-elect Schweitzer will be able to appoint Commissioners to the the Montana Transportation Commission in Districts 2, 3 & 5.  The Transportation Commission is a vital and critical link in the development of Scenic-Historic Byways in Montana.

Native Americans are encouraged to submit their names to the Governor-elect for consideration for these and other appointed positions.  The Governor-elect's web site:  http://www.govelect.mt.gov/

MTTA in Scenic Byway Coalition

The Montana Tribal Tourism Alliance has joined a coalition with Our Montana and other groups to work on the development of designated Scenic Byways in Montana.  South Dakota Tribes helped develop The Native American Scenic By-Way in that State and we hope to link our efforts together to create a National American Indian Scenic By-Way.

The Coalition will meet again on November 30 in Billings, MT.  Interested tribes, agencies, groups and individuals are welcome to attend.  For more information call Dyani or Paul at 259-4600.
