"American Indians are the greatest untold story in America"

Ron Allen, Former President, National Congress of American Indians

Montana is home to seven federally-recognized Indian Reservations and the landless (or non-Reservation) Little Shell Tribe.

Individual Tribes represented on Montana Reservations include the Assiniboine, Apsaalooke (Crow), Bitterroot Salish, Chippewa, Cree, Gros Ventre, Kootenai, Nakoda Sioux, Northern Cheyenne, Pend O'rielle,  Pikuni (Blackfeet), Sisseton-Whapeton Sioux, Teton Hunkpapa Sioux, and Yantonais Sioux.  Within these Tribes there are often a number of clans or bands, each with their own distinct background and history.

The Flathead Reservation is actually occupied by a Confederated group of Tribes, none of whom are known as "Flatheads".

Some Reservations are known by the name of the Tribe that occupies that area e.g. Blackfeet, Crow, Northern Cheyenne.  Other Reservations are known by the name of the Indian Agency in that area, e.g. Fort Belknap, Fort Peck, Rocky Boy.  Some Tribes have incorporated the name of their Reservation into the official name of the Tribe, e.g. the Fort Belknap Indian Community Council, Fort Peck Assiniboine & Sioux Tribes.

The Blackfeet Tribe (Southern Pikuni) in Montana are but one part of three large tribal groups that comprise the Blackfeet Confederacy.  The Northern Pikuni, Siksika (Blackfoot) and Kainai (Bloods) reside on Reserves in Canada.

You might be surprised to learn that half of the American Indians in Montana live in off-Reservation cities and towns all over Montana.
